Graduate Program in Education at UFSC: Academic Excellence Since 1974
The PPGE/UFSC is a national benchmark in training critical researchers and educators.
The Graduate Program in Education (strictu sensu) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) began its activities in 1974 with the creation of a Specialization Course. In 1984, the Master’s in Education was officially recognized, launching with two research lines: “Pedagogical Theory and Practice” and “Education and Work.” A third line, titled “Education and Science,” was added in 1986. Academic output in the following years proved highly dynamic, with 85 master’s theses defended across these three lines within a decade. This momentum led the PPGE to invest in a doctoral program, which was recognized in 1994.
By 2025, the alumni tracking portal recorded over 1,560 individuals who completed their training at PPGE.
With over 50 years of history, our program has established itself as a pluralistic space for scientific knowledge production in education and social impact, encompassing diverse epistemological and thematic perspectives. It bridges theory and practice through six research lines:
- Education and Communication (ECO)
- Education and Childhood (EI)
- Work, Education, and Policies (TEP)
- Subjects, Educational Processes, and Teaching (SUPED)
- Philosophy of Education (FIL)
- Sociology and History of Education (SHE)
Over its fifty-year history, PPGE has accumulated a vast body of knowledge through master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, scientific articles, books, book chapters, translations of classical and contemporary works, and active participation in national and international academic events. The program reaffirms its commitment to the academic community in Santa Catarina and Brazil, particularly in training engaged educational researchers prepared to address the multifaceted challenges of the present and future. PPGE alumni hold prominent positions in higher education institutions, K-12 schools, municipal and state education departments, and leadership roles such as university presidencies, vice-presidencies, and graduate/undergraduate program coordinators across Brazil and abroad.
Our commitments and goals:
- Train transformative researchers equipped to address Brazilian public education challenges with theoretical and practical rigor.
- Produce relevant knowledge through research, publications, and societal partnerships.
- Strengthen critical education by fostering debates on equity, democracy, and pedagogical innovation.
